Niello’s Pension Busting Measure Lands Where it Belongs: Cutting-Room Floor

For Immediate Release: Tuesday, March 24, 2011

Statement by Dave Low, chairman of Californians for Retirement Security, on Roger Niello’s decision to abandon his pension-busting ballot effort:

"It is appropriate that the flawed Niello initiative to gut retirement security for millions of Californians will end up in the scrapheap of politically-motivated failures instead of on the ballot. It was a poorly drafted attempt to punish middle-class workers that ignored the fact that workers have agreed to substantial reductions in retirement benefits and have increased their contributions towards pensions from 5 to 10 percent. We continue to believe the way to improve the state's pension system is at the bargaining table, not the ballot box."

Dozens of members of Californians for Retirement Security marched with “Pensions Not Porsches” and other signs in March to protest the proposed measure outside a Sacramento luxury automotive dealership part-owned by Niello. Californians for Retirement Security represents 1.5 million public employees and retirees.
